Verta Canfield Rites Saturday

Graveside rites for Mrs. James (Verta Maude) Canfield, 96, of the Jasper County Care Facility, a former resident of Colfax, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

The Rev. Robert Jones, pastor of the Colfax Christian Church, conducted services.

Walters–Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax handled arrangements.

Survivors are for nephews, James and Art Thomas, both of Colfax, Gomer Thomas of Newton, and Dave Thomas of San Francisco, Calif.; and two nieces Amelia Brant of Colfax and Dorothy Kennedy of Rock Island, Illinois.

The daughter of Gomer and Mary Pickett Thomas she was born Aug. 12, 1882 in Cleveland, Iowa.

She was married to Earl Shaw in 1919 and two James Canfield in 1956.

Mrs. Canfield also had resided in Olympia Wash.

She died Wednesday, Sept. 13, at the Skiff Memorial Hospital in Newton. ~ The Jasper County Tribune, Colfax Iowa, Thursday, September 21, 1978
