JOHN R. POWERS, LONGTIME KELLOGG RESIDENT, DIES

A longtime Kellogg area resident, John R. (Bert) Powers, 89, of Shellsburg, died Sunday morning at a Vinton hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday from the Kellogg Christian church with the Rev. Miland Lambertson of the Shellsburg Christian church officiating, assisted by the Rev. Herbert Miller of the Kellogg church.

Burial will be in Our Silent City cemetery at Kellogg.

Born Nov. 29th, 1875, on a farm near Kellogg, he was the son of Samuel and Helen Parmley Powers. He spent all of his life on farms near Kellogg until 1956 when he moved to Newton. A year later he moved to Shellsburg.

Survivors include his son, Roy, of Clearwater, Fla.; three daughters, Mrs. Lowell (Mabel) Cox of Shellsburg, Mrs. Earl (Jessie) Brown of Waterloo, and Mrs. Keith (Laura) Cowman of Monroe; four grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and four brothers.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, one son, and one brother.

He was a member of the IOOF and KP Lodges and a charter member of Loyal Grange.
