Marie E. Wharton Wilhelm, 90, a resident of Clearview Manor in Prairie City since 1983, died of heart failure at the facility Wednesday, May 13, 1992.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, may 18 at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton. The Rev. Jerry Brown, senior pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Newton, conducted the services. Burial was in Newton Union Cemetery.
Memorials to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of jasper County are being accepted.
Survivors are two sons, Robert Holdefer of Knoxville and Harlan Holdefer of Soddy Daisy, Tennessee; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Hummel of Newton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Forrest Holdefer in 1934 and Louis Wilhelm in 1980, a grandson, and two brothers, Steve Wharton and Wilbur Wharton.
Mrs. Wilhelm had been a teacher in Mingo, Kellogg, Malcom and Jasper County rural schools, and had operated beauty shops in Colfax and Prairie City.
She was a member of the Jasper County Historical Society, First United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and 4-0 Sunday school class, and was a former member of the Newton Camera Club and World War I Auxiliary.
The daughter of Stephen and Edith Whelan Wharton, she was born July 9, 1901 in Newton. She attended Newton schools, Grinnell College and Thompson Beautician College in Des Moines.
Mrs. Wilhelm had lived in Colfax, Prairie City and Newton from 1947 until her move to Clearview Manor in 1983.
