Anna W. Starnes

Anna W. Bach Starnes, 89, of Grinnell, a former resident of Baxter, died Monday, July 10, at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center of congestive heart failure.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 13 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.

The Rev. John Epperson, pastor of the Grinnell Christian Church, conducted the services.

Graveside rites were held at the Graceland Cemetery near Laurel.

Survivors are four sons, Donald and Dennis, both of Grinnell, Dean of Lakewood, Colo., and Richard of Charlottesville, Va.; and three daughters, Jacilyn Siepmann of Des Moines, Jeannette Lender of Brooklyn and Carol Evans of Searsboro.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Harold, a grandson, four brothers and six sisters.

Mrs. Starnes and her husband had farmed near Laurel and operated the Standard Station in Gilman and later the Starnes and Barnes Standard Oil Col. in Grinnell. After his death, she worked as a cook at Bailey Park School and Grinnell Community High School.

The daughter of Phillip and Mary Ann Ritter Bach, she was born June 9, 1906 near Baxter and was raised and educated in the Baxter area.

She was married to Harold W. Starnes in 1927 in Laurel. ~ The Jasper County tribune, Colfax, Ia., Thursday, July 20, 1995
