In Memoriam – Mr. Diller L. Guthrie was born in Lancaster county, Pa., Oct. 7, 1838; died Dec. 12, 1879; and was therefore 41 yrs. of age. He came here in 1853, at the age of 15. When the war broke out he enlisted in the 13th Iowa under Col. Crocker. He was a brave soldier, a good citizen, a kind father and a true-hearted husband. The writer visited him a few weeks since, when he remarked that he had trouble with his heart – that it sometimes ceased to beat for several seconds. He urged him, as he was liable to drop away at any moment, to make his peace with God immediately. He acknowledged the duty – promised to do it. Friday evening last soon after he retired, his wife who was still sitting up, discovered that he breathed hard, went to his side, and he was dead.
He was a member of the Masonic fraternity. On Sabbath, the 14th inst., his funeral was attended by a large body of citizens, and after a sermon by the writer from Romans xx:25, his remains were taken by the Masons to the cemetery, where they kindly performed the last rites and honors of the Order, and there left his ashes to repose until the resurrection morn.
May the Lord be very gracious to the bereaved widow and orphans.
