A Marshalltown dispatch of April 11 says a dispatch received from St. Louis this morning announces the death of Thos. H. Benton, Jr., former of this city. His body will be brought here for burial, the Masonic bodies taking charge, the services to be conducted by Grand Master Wilson, of Newton. Gen. Benton was Colonel of the 29th Iowa Infantry and was brevetted brigadier general at the close of the war. He was a candidate for Governor of this State against Gov. Stone on the Peoples’ Ticket in 1866 but was defeated. He was Superintendent of public Instruction for several terms, United States revenue collector for the Sixth Congressional District during Johnson’s administration, and held many other responsible positions. No man in Iowa was better loved or more highly respected as an officer and citizen.
