Margaret J. “Margee” Smoot of Spring Hill, Fla., passed away Sept. 5 at the age of 87 after a long illness.

Born in Chicago, her family moved to Ottumwa, IA where she graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1940. Margee attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon in 1941, majoring in drama.

With the outbreak of World War II, she returned to Ottumwa where she met her husband John E. “Bud” Smoot. They were married Nov. 14, 1943.
Margee and family moved to Newton in 1956 when Bud began working for the Maytag Company. Bud retired from Maytag in 1983 and they moved to Spring Hill, Fla.

During her time in Newton, Margee was active in helping found the Newton Community Theatre, worked as a volunteer for the Red Cross during the Vietnam War, was a member of P.E.O., raised three children and was involved in Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and other activities relating to the kids.

She was a good bridge player and an avid tennis player. Most of all she loved her family and friends.

She is survived by a daughter, Sara (George) Evans; sons Jeff and Brad (Laura); four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, a granddaughter and step-grandson.
