Mable (Mathes) De Vries, 90, of Pella, Iowa, formerly of the Prairie City and Otley, Iowa, areas, passed away Friday morning, Oct. 1, 2010, in Jefferson Place at Hearthstone.
Mable, wife of the late Edward De Vries, is survived by three sons and their wives, Lowell De Vries of Des Moines, Iowa, Keith and Marcia De Vries of Monroe, Iowa, and Byron and Beth De Vries of Earlham, Iowa.
A funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the First Reformed Church in Pella. Interment will be made in the Graceland Cemetery in Pella. Visitation will be today at the Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home, where the family will be present from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
For those desiring, memorials may be given to Gideon’s International or the First Reformed Church of Prairie City, Iowa.

Mable Mathes was one of ten children that were born to John N. and Jeannette Vos Mathes. She was born in Marion County north of Pella, Iowa on March 14, 1920. Mable completed the 8th grade at the European No. 3 Country Grade School.
On March 5, 1948, she was united in marriage with Edward De Vries at the home of her parents. To this union five children were born: Lowell, Keith, Byron, and twin girls, Vivian Lynn and Lillian Vern. Mable was a dedicated homemaker her entire lifetime and throughout their marriage they farmed in various places in the Prairie City and Otley, Iowa areas. In 1980, they built a home north of Otley. Mable spent much of the later years of her life painting china plates and making quilts.
On October 19, 2005, Edward passed away following a very brief illness. Following his death Mable moved into Fair Haven at Pella where she resided until becoming a resident at Jefferson Place. On Friday morning, October 1, 2010, she passed away there at the age of 90 years, 6 months and 17 days. Mable will be remembered for her kindness, the care she displayed for her family, reaching out to others and the sharing of produce and flowers from her garden.
Mable is survived by three sons and their wives, 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren: Lowell De Vries of Des Moines, Iowa;Keith and Marcia (Steenhoek) De Vries of Monroe, Iowa,Scott De Vries,Jason and Karen De Vries,David and Lori De Vries,Jarred, Darrell, Kaleb;Byron and Beth (Jacquis) De Vries of Earlham, Iowa,Craig De Vries,Lauren Trujillo. Of her original family of ten siblings Mable leaves three sisters and their husband: Esther (Herman) Slykhuis, Evelyn (Arie) Beyer, Edith and her husband, Irvin Huyser and one brother, Ervin Mathes all of Pella, Iowa; along with the following sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Leona (De Vries) and Clarence Byma of Sunnyside, Washington, Margery (De Vries) Dykema of Strasburg, North Dakota, John Martin and Celia De Vries of Pella, Iowa.
Mable was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; their twin daughters, Vivian Lynn and Lillian Vern, who died in infancy in 1959; her parents, John N. and Jeannette Mathes; two sisters, Agnes Mathes and Sarah Mathes; three brothers and their wives: Valentine and Jennie Mathes, William and Beulah Mathes, Harold and Pauline Mathes, her sister-in-law, Johanna (Ervin) Mathes, her brothers-in-law, Herman Slykhuis and Arie Beyer; along with her parents-in-law, Andrew and Nellie Van Zante De Vries; a sister-in-law, Esther (De Vries) Lourens, and 3 brothers-in-law: Paul De Vries, Lester De Vries and Harold De Vries.
Mable was a longtime member of the First Reformed Church in Prairie City, Iowa where she had taught childrens Sunday School Classes and had been active in womens groups. She had been active with the Gideon's Auxiliary, the Farm Bureau Women's Club and a china painting club.
