Jim was born on May 21, 1933, in Lemmon, South Dakota. As a young man, he proudly served in the United States Army and became the Division meat cutter. On April 24, 1957, he was united in marriage to Alice Thompson of Prairie City. He was a retired farmer and following his retirement, Jim and Alice owned and operated the Country Connection Bed & Breakfast. Jim was a member of the United Methodist Church Board, and served as a Consistory member of the First Reformed Church, both in Prairie City. He served on the Prairie City school board as President. In the 2000 and 2010 Census years, Jim fulfilled the role of Census Enumerator and often remarked how much he enjoyed meeting the people in his territory.
