Glatha L. Winchip, 96, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Saturday evening, November 11, 2017, at the Maquoketa Care Center in Maquoketa, Iowa.
A celebration of Glatha's life will be held at 11 A.M., Thursday, November 16, 2017 at the United Church of Christ in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M. on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Cremation will follow the visitation and burial will be at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa, Iowa.
Glatha Lucille Hute was born on March 24, 1921 in Fulton, Iowa, to Roy A. and Nora Mae (Shields) Hute. She was a 1938 graduate of Maquoketa High School. She married Robert Barker on March 7, 1940 in Maquoketa, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Karen and Bob. They divorced and she later married Marvin Winchip in 1967 in Maquoketa, Iowa.
Glatha had first worked for the Deputy Clerk at the Courthouse for a short time. In 1958 she became the executive secretary for Clinton Engines in Maquoketa. She retired in 1994 after 36 years.
Glatha was a member of the United Church of Christ in Maquoketa, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary for 71 years, Jackson County Historical Society, and the Red Hats Society. She had previously been a member of the Clinton Engines Association, BPW, PALS Program where she had also served as a board member, and the WA TAN YE Club.
Glatha enjoyed crocheting, dancing, fishing, traveling and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Those left to honor Glatha's memory include her children, Karen (Billy) Garien of Maquoketa, IA, and Bob Barker of Maquoketa, IA; step-children, Bob Winchip of Spearfish, S. Dakota, Nancy Winchip of Shawnee, KS, and Julie Winchip of Tempe, AZ; 3 grandchildren, Krista (Todd) Mulder, Kevin (Kiri) Barker and Josh Garien; and 3 great-grandchildren, Alana Barker, Lucas Mulder and Averi Barker. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Roy Neville Hute, a sister Pauline Brady, and her longtime special friend Robert Davis.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to the United Church of Christ in Maquoketa.
