Service Star Turns to Gold.
Edward G. Fogarty died in a hospital in France on October 9th from wounds received in action. This sad intelligence was received in a telegram addressed to his brother Mike last Wednesday. Edward Fogerty thus became the first of the brave, stalwart young men from this community to lay down his life in the great world war. This brings the war home to Elma people more vividly than it could otherwise be done. Ed was a splendid young man and made a brave, good soldier. He saw much active duty in the front liens of the great conflict. We can rest assured that the honorable traditions of America’s bravest warriors was upheld by this young farmer schooled only in the paths of peace. His memory will long be cherished not only by the members of his immediate family but hy{sic} all the members of the community. We suggest that a fitting memorial service be held in his honor. –Elma New Era.

Transcriber’s Note: The last name is spelled two different ways but Find a Grave shows Fogarty. He was born Apr. 19, 1887 and is buried in Calvary Elma Cemetery.
