PATON-Darwin Max Whipple, 54, of Paton died Monday, July 15, 2002, at his home. Services were held Friday, July 19, at the Hastings Funeral Home in Jefferson with graveside rites at Northlawn Memory Gardens in Iowa Falls.

Darwin was born July 24, 1947, in Hampton, to Lorenzo (Bud) and Viola Bonin Whipple. He attended school in Alden. He served in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Carson, Colo., Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and Germany. During his time in the Army he received his GED. Darwin married Bonnie Dugan and they were parents of four children, Darwin, Angela, David and Regina. He later married Jean Pollock and they were parents of one son, Douglas. Darwin was married to Karri Yeichert for a time. He had farmed in Greene County and was a heavy equipment mechanic, working for Becker Gravel in Stratford when he became ill. Darwin enjoyed cars, racing, collecting model cars, bowling, fishing, camping and garage sales.

He survived by three sons, Darwin and wife Nici of Adel, David and wife Stacey of Indianola, and Doug and wife Celli of Jefferson; two daughters, Angela Chapman of Des Moines and Gina Whipple of Gowrie; two brothers, Jerry Whipple and wife Pam of Hampton and Verlin Whipple of Hampton; a sister, Lori and husband Todd Mensing of Coulter; 17 grandchildren; and a special friend, Jan Black of Jefferson. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
