APLINGTON-Viola Mae Kalkwarf, 72, of Aplington died Sunday, July 14, 2002, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls. Services were held Thursday, July 18 at the First Reformed Church in Aplington with burial in the Bethel Reformed Cemetery, Aplington. Rev. Harlan DeJong officiated.

Viola was born June 30, 1930, near Ackley to Fred and Lizzie Lupkes Essman. She graduated from Ackley High School in 1948 and was employed as a teller at the Iowa State Bank in Kesley. On Sept. 17, 1965, she married John Kalkwarf at the Washington Reformed Church near Ackley. They farmed north of Kesley until moving to Aplington in 1985. She was a member of the Washington Reformed Church where she taught Sunday school, member of UPW and sang in the choir. She was a member of the Aplington Women's Club, the Auxiliary of the Gideons and was chairman of the local blood drive. Her hobbies were attending auctions and making quilts.

She is survived by her husband; a stepson, Keith Kalkwarf and wife Virginia of Aplington; two stepdaughters, Marcella Rewerts and husband Ervin of Aplington, and Barbara Renken and husband Leland of West Concord, Minn.; seven stepgrandchildren; 14 stepgreat-grandchildren; three sisters, Edna Essman, Esther Maifeld and Pearl Essman, all of Ackley. She was preceded in death by her parents; and an infant sister and brother.

Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel of Aplington was in charge of arrangements.
