RADCLIFFE-Arnold Maakestad, 92, of Radcliffe, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002. Funeral services were Saturday, May 25 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Radcliffe, with burial at the Radcliffe Cemetery.
Arnold was born on Aug. 14, 1909, to William and Martha Oakland Maakestad of Radcliffe. He attended a rural elementary school and later Waldorf Academy and Red Wing Seminary Academy. On Dec. 25, 1933, he married Esther Bjerkestrand and they farmed in the Radcliffe area for most of their lives except for a short time spent in southern Minnesota. Arnold was active at Our Savior's Lutheran church in Radcliffe, serving as a Sunday school teacher and church council member. He also served on the Iowa District Youth Committee, and was on the Board of Directors at Bethany Manor in Story City for 12 years.
Survivors include his four children, Philip and his wife, Judie, of Renton, Wash., Ted and his wife, Nancy, of Radcliffe, Rachel and her husband, Sherman Coltvet, of Rochester, Minn., and Lois and her husband, Clark Cary, of Blue Earth, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one brother Theodore Maakestad of Cedar Falls; two sisters, Verdelle Hoth and Esther Stensland, both of Radcliffe; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his wife; his parents; brothers John, Harry, Leonard and Wilbur Maakestad; and sisters, Ella Hovelsrud, Josie Frankenburger, Marie Berve, Emma Smith, Alma Schwartz and Margaret Maakestad.
Boeke Funeral Home in Radcliffe was in charge of arrangements.
