RADCLIFFE-Robert Daniel Newhall, 79, of Radcliffe, died of cancer Saturday, May 18, 2002, at the Hubbard Care Center. Services were held Tuesday, May 21 at the Salem Lutheran Church in Radcliffe, with burial in the Radcliffe Cemetery. Rev. Craig Benson officiated.

Robert was born July 7, 1922, in Hardin County to Lawrence and Martha Tystahl Newhall. He graduated from Radcliffe High School in 1940 and on Nov. 1, 1941, he married Herma Thorsnes at St. Petri Lutheran Church in Story City. They farmed northwest of Radcliffe and were parents of three children. He was a school bus driver for Radcliffe Community Schools and night supervisor at the Eldora Training School. After the death of his wife in 1985, he married Jane Chaplin on July 11, 1990, in Nashua.

He is survived by his wife, Jane; a son, Richard Newhall and wife, Susan, of Waterloo; a daughter, Marilyn Raska-Engelson and husband, Will, of Alden; a son-in-law, Virgil Smith of Boone; two stepsons, Virgil Chaplin of Eldora, and Mike Chaplin and his wife, Marsha, of Garden City; a daughter-in-law, Judy Chaplin of Eagle River, Wis.; 13 grandchildren; nine step grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 12 step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; a brother, Donald; a sister, Florence Groninga; a daughter, Kathleen Smith; and a stepson, Mervin Chaplin.

Boeke Funeral Home in Radcliffe, was in charge of arrangements.
