HORACE DELBERT NICHOLS, 82, OF SPRINGDALE, ARKANSAS, AND FORMERLY OF IOWA FALLS, PASSED AWAY SUNDAY, APRIL 28, 2002, AT THE CLAREMORE VETERANS CENTER, CLAREMORE, OKLAHOMA. CAUSE: COMPLICATION FOLLOWING ALZHEMEIERS. FUNERAL SERVICES FOR HORACE DELBERT NICHOLS, WILL BE 2:00 PM THURSDAY, MAY 1, 2002, AT THE LINN'S FUNERAL CHAPEL, IOWA FALLS, WITH BURIAL TO FOLLOW AT BERLIN, JACKSON TOWNSHIP CEMETERY, HARDIN COUNTY, IOWA. VISITATION WILL BE ONE HOUR PRIOR TO SERVICES THURSDAY AT THE LINN'S FUNERAL HOME, IOWA FALLS. MEMORIALS MAY BE DIRECTED TO THE FIRST BAPTIST HOME MISSIONS, THE FIRST BAPTIST BUS MINISTRY, SPRINGDALE, THE NORTHWEST ARKANSAS ADULT DAY CARE CENTER, P.O. Horace Delbert Nichols was born January 20, 1920, at Alden, Iowa, the son of Huber E. and Leila [ Robbins ] Nichols. He attended the Owasa, Iowa Community Schools.
He was a veteran of World War II with the United States Army Air Corps as a fighter aircraft mechanic with photo reconnaissance, fighter, and heavy bomber groups in Africa, Sicily, Italy, Balkans, and France.
On June 5, 1946, he was united in marriage to Velma O. Barnhart, at the Cottage Church, Hardin County, Iowa.
He was in the plumbing and heating business in Iowa Falls operating Nichols Plumbing and Heating until 1973 then moving to Springdale for a more moderate climate. He was a boiler operator-maintenance man at Scotts Paper in Rogers, Arkansas until declining health forced him into early retirement.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Springdale, Arkansas, and the America Legion.
Horace is survived by his wife: Velma O. Nichols of Springdale, three sons: Tadd Nichols and wife Barbara of Independence, Iowa, Timothy Nichols and wife Marilyn of Independence, Iowa, Mark A. Nichols and wife Angie of Fayetteville, Arkansas; two daughters: Leila S. Bower and husband Marvin of Bentonville, Arkansas, Mary E. Quam and husband Jeff of Gentry, Arkansas; one sister: Mary Catherine Neubauer and husband Johnny of Alden, Iowa; twelve grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two grandchildren: Aaron Nichols and Naomi Nichols Mussman.
