MRS. M. H. PORTER DIED MONDAY
It was with the deepest sorrow and regret that the people of this community heard the news of the death of Mrs. M. H. Porter, which occurred Monday morning of this week, following a severe sickness of ten months or more.
Karen Marie Nelsena Porter was born September 24, 1876, in Odensa, Denmark, and died at her home in Jewell, September 1, 1919, at the age of 42 years, 11 months, and 23 days. She came to America with her parents when but a child eight years of age. The family settled near Scranton, Iowa, at which place her parents still live. She spent her early girlhood days at Scranton and there became interested in her religious welfare and united with the Methodist Episcopal church. She was married October 14, 1896, to Melvin H. Porter. There came to bless this home six children, of whom five are living--Newman, Ethelda, Melva, James, and Katherine. One son, George Oliver, has preceded her to the better land.
She moved to Jewell in January, 1902, and soon won for herself a place in all the social and religious activities of the community. She joined the Congregational church soon after locating in Jewell and became one of its most active and efficient members. She was always present at the regular services whenever able to be thee and was a faithful member of the choir.
Mrs. Porter live a beautiful Christian life and the fruits of it were very clearly manifested in her last sickness. Patient amid suffering, trusting God, believing all things were for the best, she continued to keep cheer and sunlight in the home so that none might feel any burden from her affliction. She desired to live for the sake of her family, but was ready at any moment for the summons. Her labors are ended, she has her reward.
She leaves to mourn her, a husband, five children, father and mother Porter, three sisters and one brother, besides the many friends of the community and her church.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon. The body laid in state at the home from ten until one o'clock Wednesday, and at two o'clock services were held at the home by the Congregational church pastor, Rev. Darley. The body was laid at rest in Evergreen cemetery.
The Record joins with the friends throughout this community in extending our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved husband and family in their hour of sorrow.
