FLORENCE ARAELLE STONEHOCKER, daughter of John L. Gregg and Hattie M. Williams, was born January 18, 1913 near Linden, Iowa. She spent her early life in the family home and attended country school near there.
On October 3, 1931 Florence was united in marriage to Otto Stonehocker at Guthrie Center, Iowa. To this union ten children were born. They farmed most of their life in the Linden, Redfield area and maintained several of the surrounding cemeteries. They retired in Linden until Otto’s death in 1968. Later Florence moved to the Adel, Earlham area and the last five years in Afton.
Her family was a full time job but when time allowed she enjoyed gardening, embroidering and playing cards. Baking was a necessity and a favorite of the children and grandchildren. She had a special love for her grandchildren and enjoyed telling them stories about the family. The “family” was important to her and when times were difficult, she was the keystone that held everyone together.
On April 19, 1991 Florence died at the Afton Care Center where she had been a redisent the past two years. She was 78. She was preceded in death by her parents: husband; two daughters, Jean and Marie; one son, Leonar; a great grandson, Jason; three sister; and three brothers.
She is survived by daughters: Ruby Blew of Afton, Bonnie Cassady of Adel, Pearl Leeper of Ames, Nebraska, and Sarah Davis of Kellerton; sons: Floyd of Griswold, and Forrest and Rex both of Fremont, Nebraska; 42 grandchildren; 58 great grandchildren; a sister, Vera Cabelka of Yale; and a brother, Leslie Gregg of Earlham.
Florence will be dearly missed by her family and a host of other relatives and friends.
