Please Help! Birth,Marriage,Death,Burial

I just found out that my 2nd great-grandfather, Thomas Henry BEST had a wife before marrying my 2nd great-grandmother. The only information I can seem to find on her is the information he provided in 1897. There were two entries that he left and both leave conflicting information, yet here they are: 1)Bernette CONKLIN born about 1865 in Rockford, Floyd, Indiana died 1883. 2)Bernette CONKLING born about 1865 Lloyd, Iowa. - Both entries were written two days apart in 1897. There is no such place as Rockford, Floyd, Indiana and no such place as Lloyd, Iowa. There is however Rockford, Floyd, Iowa. I have no idea when or where they would have been married or where she died, but if the dates are correct she would have been about 18 years old when she died so they couldn't have been married for long before she died. I think I found Thomas in the 1880 census in Fayette County, Iowa so it is possible that if he stayed in that area he could have met Bernette in that area. I have been unable to figure out how to proceed or where to search next to find her Birth, their Marriage, or her Death or Burial. I know she existed only because of the information he left, but how do I proceed to find out more about her? Any help is very much appreciated. Most Sincerely, Elaine Cook
