Begin with the generation you are sure of. What was your great grandfather's name, when and where was he born, who did he marry, where did they live, children's names. If you great-grandfather was alive in Iowa in 1925, the census then should give both of his parents' names. Or the census for one of his siblings might tell that.

I find an Emmet Taylor, b. abt 1853 in Fayette county on a number of census, but they all report he was born in New York.
