Does anyone know how folks traveled from Pennsylvania or for that matter from any place in the North East USA to Iowa in the early days. My family moved from Centre County, PA to Fayette County in 1854 or 1855.
I have no idea if it was Rail Road, Wagon train or a brisk walk. I have recently received copies of letters that were sent between PA and IA during the Civil War so mail service was up and running at that time. How was that moved?
