Telegraph Herald (Dubuque, IA) - Wednesday, October 30, 2002

Geneva Arlene Hursey, 82, of 73 Modern Way, Iowa City, formerly of Dubuque, died of pancreatic cancer Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at Lantern Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Coralville, Iowa.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Rockdale Cemetery, Dubuque, with the Rev. Melissa Spoerl officiating. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City.

She was born on March 30, 1920, in Boone, Iowa, daughter of William Edgar and Elsie (Steen) Peterson. She married Kenneth W. Hursey on May 10, 1937, at Rockdale Methodist Church, Dubuque.

Geneva was a monitor/supervisor for the Sylvania Electronics Co., Burlington, Iowa, for 15 years. Following its closure, she took an early retirement opportunity to pursue a lifelong dream, where she learned to play piano and organ. She then spent the following 15 years teaching piano to students in the Burlington area.

She enjoyed traveling with her husband, daughters and grandchildren and visited sites coast-to-coast and border-to-border over a 20 year period. She was an avid golf fan and did not miss a Tiger Woods competition on TV. She also was a talented bowler and competed on the national level. Her family enjoyed the results of her masterful crocheting talent.

While residing in Burlington, she was a member of the West Hill Methodist Church and the Burlington Organ Club, serving as the club's only historian. She also enjoyed spending quality time with her grandchildren and could be called upon anytime for assistance and companionship.

In 1994, her husband, Kenneth, passed away in Burlington. Following his death, she moved to Iowa City to live near her daughters.

Surviving are three daughters, Janet Erickson and Shirley Fouts, both of Iowa City, and Mary Hursey, of Burlington; three grandsons, Lee Erickson, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and David (Lori) Erickson and John Erickson, both of Iowa City; three granddaughters, Rina Veltri, of Kentucky, Mary Simmons, of Florida, and Janina (Dragan) Sunjic, of Lincoln, Neb.; eight great-grandchildren; her oldest brother, Verne Arthur Peterson, of California; and special friends, Carol and Tom Glasgow, of Fort Madison, Iowa, who added much joy to her life for more than 60 years.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; her younger brothers, Robert Merle Peterson and William Robert Peterson; and her older sister, Esther May Marks.

Memorials may be given to Iowa City Hospice.
