PLACID, Iowa - Leo Lloyd Sweeney, 72, of 21002 Pilot Grove Road, Placid, rural Epworth, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, following a sudden illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Catholic Church, Placid, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Epworth, where there will be a wake service at 2 p.m.

Mr. Sweeney was employed at Caradco in Dubuque for 18 years, he also farmed and did custom baling for 28 years.

He was born on Jan. 9, 1935, in rural Epworth, son of Leo L. and Mabel (McDermott) Sweeney. On Dec. 26, 1969, he was united in marriage to Jane Urbain at St. John's Catholic Church in Placid.

He is a graduate of the former Peosta High School.

Lloyd enjoyed bowling and was an avid Red Sox fan. He loved to converse and tell stories with family and friends. His favorite holiday was St. Patrick's Day, on which he enjoyed singing along with Irish tunes.

He was a member of St. John's Parish in Placid.

Surviving are his wife, Jane Sweeney, of Placid, rural Epworth; four children, Matt Sweeney, of Epworth, Maureen (Brian) Hall, of Dubuque, Tim Sweeney (special friend, Kathy Koelker), of Epworth, and Katie (Jeremy) Stuart, of Dubuque; four brothers, Philip (Mary) Sweeney and James (Lois) Sweeney, both of Farley, Thomas (JoAnn) Sweeney, of Epworth, and Francis (Sharon) Sweeney, of Dubuque; a sister, Julie (Paul) Hildebrand, of Sun Prairie, Wis.; a brother-in-law, Charles Hemmer, of Dubuque; and five grandchildren, Brandon, Taylor, and Sydney Hall and Madalyn and Karli Stuart.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Benny Sweeney; and four sisters, Sr. Rose Sweeney, OSF, Therese Connolly, Louise Conrad and Ann Hemmer; and a brother-in-law, John Connolly.

A Leo Lloyd Sweeney memorial fund has been established.
