EPWORTH, Iowa - Howard J. "Whitey" Delaney, 82, of 21150 Pleasant Grove Road East, Placid, rural Epworth, died at 9:37 a.m. Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Catholic Church, with burial in St. John's Cemetery, both in Placid, rural Epworth. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Epworth, where there will be a wake service at 4:30 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m.

Mr. Delaney worked as a truck driver for Dubuque Sand and Gravel. He then farmed in the Placid area.

He was born on Nov. 10, 1917, in Placid, son of Peter and Mary (Waddick) Delaney. He married Madonna E. Bakey on April 10, 1951, at St. Raphael's Cathedral, Dubuque.

He received his education in the St. John's School, Placid. He was a member of St. John's Parish, Placid, and the Farley Knights of Columbus Council 2001.

Surviving are his wife, Madonna Delaney, of Placid; three daughters, Susan (Joe) Gansemer, of Epworth, Michelle Delaney, of Dubuque, and Jill (Paul) Doyle, of Farley; two sons, Peter (Deb) Delaney, of Gifford, Ill., and Leo (Janet) Delaney, of Grays Lake, Ill.; 16 grandchildren, Jeremiah, Rachel, Mary and Amanda Delaney, Kevin, Michael, Matthew and Emily Delaney, Gina, Nick, Chris, Laura and Rebekah Gansemer, Robert and Meghan Delaney and Katie Doyle; three great-grandsons; a daughter-in-law, Cindy Bolsinger, of Epworth; two sisters, Bertilla McDermott, of Dubuque, and Helen Kennedy, of Epworth; and four sisters-in-law, Virginia Delaney, of Epworth, Eileen George, of San Benito, Texas, Rita Demmer, of Peosta, and Delores Gregorich, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert Delaney, on Nov. 10, 1986; a granddaughter, Hannah Gansemer; a grandson, Jeffrey Delaney; three brothers, Merlin, Martin and Joseph Delaney; and a sister, Viola McDermott.
