FARLEY, Iowa - Merlin Boll, 87, of Farley, Iowa, passed away Thursday, February 25, 2016, at Hawkeye Care Center, in Dubuque, Iowa.

Friends and relatives of Merlin may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, February 28, 2016, at Reiff Funeral Home, in Farley, Iowa, where a wake service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friends may also call after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Services for Merlin will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 29, 2016, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, in Farley, Iowa, with Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Burial will be held in St. John's Cemetery in Placid, Iowa, with full military honors accorded by Cascade American Legion Post #528.

Merlin was born January 27, 1929, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of William and Margaret (Rolli) Boll. He received his education in the Dubuque county rural schools. On May 1, 1954, he was united in marriage to Marlene McDermott at St. John's the Baptist Catholic Church in Peosta, Iowa. She preceded him in death on December 22, 2007.

He was employed with the Dubuque County Road Maintenance Department until his retirement in 1994. He was a very gentle man, he loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, going for rides in the country and cooking big meals. He also loved a good game of euchre with family and friends. He was an Army Veteran, having served in the Korean War.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Parish in Farley, Iowa, and Cascade American Legion Post #528 for which he served as past Commander and Vice Commander.

He is survived by five children, Cherrie (Steve) Thier, of Farley, IA, Linda Lake, of Holy Cross, IA, Jeff (Amy) Boll, of Asbury, IA, Raleigh Boll, of Santee, CA, and Karla (Don) Trenkamp, of Dyersville, IA; 11 grandchildren, Angela (Tim) English, Jennifer (Pat) Hogrefe, Brandon Lake, Natalie, Alex and Gavin Boll, Kaleigh and McKenzie Boll, Maggie, Holly and Wade Trenkamp; five great-grandchildren, Claire and Bennett English and Ashton, Mya and Aiden Hogrefe; and two sisters-in-law, Mick Boll and Ruth Boll both of Dubuque, IA.

He also is preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Andrew, Sylvester, LeRoy and William Boll; and a sister, Marie Reisen
