ZWINGLE, Iowa - Services for Mrs. Eldon L. (Susan A. Becker) Merfeld, 50, 26907 154th Ave., Zwingle, will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Assumption Catholic Church, Sylvia Switch, rural Zwingle.

Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., Dubuque, where there will be a parish wake service at 4:30 p.m.

Mrs. Merfeld was employed at Basket Expressions on Bluff Street in Dubuque for the past five years.

She was born on Jan. 14, 1946, in Dubuque, daughter of John and Clara (Frick) Becker. She died at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, 1996, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque, after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

She married Eldon L. Merfeld on Aug. 1, 1964, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Dubuque, Ill.

She was a member of Assumption Parish and its rosary society and was a charter member of Tons of Fun. Susan enjoyed gardening. She especially loved "her babies" - her grandchildren.

Surviving are her husband, Eldon L. Merfeld; two daughters, Tresa M. (Daniel) Heber, of Dubuque, and Jenifer L. Merfeld, at home; three sons, Jay J. (Linda) Merfeld, of Dubuque, Brett D. (Nicole) Merfeld, of Morrison, Ill., and Thomas J. Merfeld, at home; four grandchildren, Mark and Megan Heber and Nicholas and Rachel Merfeld; and her mother, Clara Becker, of East Dubuque.

She was preceded in death by her father, John Becker.

Susan touched the lives of many people. She will always be remembered for her spirit of fun and her listening ear.
