Benjamin R. Atchison, 74, of 2662 Jackson St., died after a lengthy illness at 7:45 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at home.

Chapel services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque.

Mr. Atchison worked at the former Dubuque Packing Co. for 45 years until his retirement. He later worked part-time at Alter Scrap Processing and for Louis Mihalakis.

He was born on Feb. 26, 1927, in Dubuque, son of Wesley and Bertha "Tiny" (DeBord) Atchison. He married Margaret B. "Margie" Wolter on Feb. 23, 1947, in Dubuque.

He served with the Army during World War II in the Asiatic and Pacific Campaigns. He received the WWII Victory Medal. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling and playing bingo. Ben and Margie also enjoyed taking car trips.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret B. "Margie" Atchison; two daughters, Debra L. (Louis) LuGrain and Gayle L. Atchison, both of Dubuque; five sons, Allen J. Atchison, Wesley R. "Ray" (Wanda) Atchison, George F. (Jenny) Atchison and John P. Atchison, all of Dubuque, and Ben M. "Dude" Atchison, of Fort Dodge, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Irma Schoenberger, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Johnny Merz; three sisters, Mrs. Jim (Mary Jane) Kelly, Nellie Ohnesorge and Mrs. Melvin (Dora) Johnson; and a brother, Wesley Atchison.

A Benjamin R. Atchison Memorial Fund has been established.

A special thank you to Dr. Kukla and Dr. Lally and to the nurses and staff of Hospice of Dubuque for their care and concern for Ben.
