EVA SCHAFER

BURLINGTON, Iowa — Eva Josephine Schafer, 96, of Burlington, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

The Rev. Tom Smith will officiate. Interment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for First Christian Church (Disciples).

Mrs. Schafer was born June 18, 1912, in Drury Township of Rock Island County, Ill., the daughter of Joseph and Myrtle (Carithers) Wagler. On Nov. 5, 1932, she married Raymond Neal Schafer in Rock Island. He preceded her in death on Aug. 22, 1987.

She worked at Burlington Instrument Company, Wells and Lamont Glove Factory and retired in 1976 from IRC.

She was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples) and its Martha Group for over 80 years, First Christian Church Prayer Circle and a past member of P.T.A. She was a 1,000 Hour Volunteer at St. Francis Hospital and a Cub Scout den mother. She enjoyed gardening, walking and shopping and was an avid reader.

Survivors include two sons, Monte K. (Patsy) Schafer of West Burlington and Dennis N. (Linda) Schafer of Toledo, Ohio; five grandchildren, Brian, Connie, Matthew, Denise and Michael; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Gertrude Fletcher of Burlington; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her husband, parents, three sisters and two brothers preceded her in death.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, Lunning Chapel, Burlington. Visitation: 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m.
