Joseph Beck Dead
HE DIED FROM BLOOD POISONING AFTER SUFFERING FOR SIXTY HOURSJoseph Beck, a well known citizen who conducted a grocery and saloon on Madison Avenue, died at 5 o'clock yesterday morning after a severe struggle of sixty hours with a case of blood poisoning. During the storm Sunday afternoon a front window at his place was blown in, and in order to protect his wares, he proceeded to nail a carpet over the aperture. While on the top of a step-ladder he fell and his elbow struck the window sash, in which pieces of jagged glass stood upright. His arm was cut very badly, and he bled profusely, but after a surgeon had sewn up th wound it was thought he would suffer no serious consequences. His state of health seems to have been such however that blood-poisoning ensued, as stated and death was the result.
He leaves a widow and five children; his mother survives him, also his brother, Gebhard Beck, and two sisters. The deceased had resided in Burlington since the year 1867. The funeral will take place tomorrow morning, according to notice elsewhere.
