Barbara Jane Cain, 79, of Bonita Springs, Fla., formerly of Burlington, died at 7 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006, at North Collier Hospital in Naples, Fla.

Born Feb. 25, 1927, in Fort Madison, she was the daughter of Thomas J. and Mable Marie Hageman Hopewell. On June 18, 1949, she married Richard W. Cain in Burlington. He died Oct. 22, 1985.

She worked as a telephone operator for 31 years at Northwestern Bell. She was a member of Ss. John and Paul Catholic Church in Burlington. She was a member of St. Paul's Altar and Rosary Society. She supported Birthright. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. She enjoyed playing bingo and traveling.

Survivors include one daughter, Teresa Petersen of Miami; one son, Patrick Cain of Bonita Springs; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers, Thomas Hopewell of Adel, Dennis Hopewill of Simi Valley, Calif., and Mark Hopewell of Burlington; nieces; and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

The Rosary will be recited in Prugh's Chapel at 6 p.m. Monday, after which the family will receive friends until 8 p.m.

The funeral service for Mrs. Cain will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Patrick Hilgendorf as celebrant. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Burlington area Catholic Schools.
