J. Paul Dehner Taken By Death

Services to be Held Tuesday Morning For Pioneer Burlington Cooper

J. Paul Dehner, 92, of 1604 M. Pleasant street, residnet of Burlington 90 years and a pioneer cooper here, died at his home Sunday morning at 5:15 after a six week illness.

Born in Grosselfingen, Hohensoler, germany, June 26, 1844, he came to the United States, July4, 1846 and lived in New Orleans a year before coming to Burlington by boat at the age of three.

One of the few remaining local coopers, Mr. Dehner retired some years ago. Many years ago, he worked for the father of City Assessor, Theodore Schaefer as a cooper. This was once an active occupation with barrels used more extensively than today and being made by hand.

On May 16, 1871, he was married to Christina Haller. She died four years ago. Mr. Dehner was a member of St. John Catholic church and of St. John society.

Surviving are nine children: Mrs. John Ertzinger, Mrs. William Rehmann, Mrs. John Soethe, Ann Dehner, Leona Dehner, Lawrence Dehner, and John Dehner, all of this city; Henry Dehner of Carman, Ill., and Mrs. Carl Denz, Chicago, Ill. Twenty-nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren survive in addition to a sister, Mrs. Mary Moehn, of Burlington.

Funeral services will be held at St. John church at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Sacred Heart cemetery. The body was removed from Giles chapel today to the home where members of the St. John society will recite the rosary tonight at 7:30. The cortage will leave the home at 8:30 tomorrow morning for the church.
