Deceased Name: Lawrence J. Pettinger

DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Lawrence J. "Schwartz" Pettinger, 91, of 416 First Ave. East, Dyersville, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with burial in St. Francis Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday at Reiff Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m. There also will be a Knights of Columbus rosary at 6 p.m.

He owned and operated Schwartz's Tavern in Dyersville for many years. He was owner of an outdoor advertising agency. He owned and operated the former Cardinal Drive-In for many years and was part-owner of a mink farm. He later owned and operated the Cardinal Lounge, Dyersville.

He was born on Sept. 19, 1909, in Shannon City, son of Prosper and Genevieve "Jennie" (Poemas) Pettinger. He married Stella A. Luehrsmann on June 14, 1932, at St. Francis Xavier, Dyersville; she died on Oct. 19, 1983.

He received his education in Dyersville-area schools and was a graduate of the former St. Francis Boys Academy in Dyersville.

He was a member of St. Francis Parish, Dyersville, the Dyersville Knights of Columbus Council 1734, and the Dyersville Golf and Country Club. He also was a volunteer fireman for the Dyersville Volunteer Fire Department.

Surviving are two sons, Marvin (Carol) Pettinger and Ken (Carol) Pettinger, both of Dyersville; a daughter, Mary Ann Savolt, of Dyersville; 20 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Jane Pettinger-Commock, of Lake of the Ozarks, Osage Beach, Mo.; a sister, Marie Fangmann, of Stonehill Care Center, Dubuque; and three sisters-in-law, Georgene Pettinger, of Worthington, Blanche Luehrsmann, of Dyersville, and Anna Mae Reiff, of Farley.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Donald J. Pettinger, on Dec. 20, 1993; a son-in-law, John Savolt, on Feb. 12, 1979; a granddaughter, Natalie Ann Pettinger, on April 24, 1965; a great-grandson, Kyle J. Savolt, on Nov. 4, 1989; a sister, Josephine Huberty; and five brothers, Andrew "Prosper," Emil, Frank, Leo and John, in infancy.
