DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Joseph A. Schlichte, 91, of Dyersville, died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011, at Oak Crest Manor, Dyersville.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with the Rev. Noah Diehm officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary recited at 5 p.m. and an American Legion service at 7 p.m.

He was born on Nov. 25, 1919, in Dyersville, son of John B. and Anna (Willenbring) Schlichte. He married Germaine M. Olberding on Oct. 7, 1941, in Dyersville; she preceded him in death.

Joe was a veteran, having served in the Army from 1942 to 1944.

He worked for the former Dubuque Pack Co. for 27 years before retiring in 1982.

Joe was a member of American Legion Post 137 for more than 60 years, a Knights of Columbus member and an usher at church.

He enjoyed watching his grandkids play ball, spending time with friends and playing cards. Joe always knew where everyone was because he memorized license plates. Sundays were spent with family, serving sausage and cheese and gathering the family for dinner, drinks and cards.

Surviving are a daughter, Lois (Roger) Klostermann, of Dyersville; a son, Marvin (Mary) Schlichte, of Cedar Rapids; a son-in-law, Loras Rausch, of Dyersville;

10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; siblings, Bernard (Ardella) Schlichte, of Edgewood, and Verna Klostermann, of Dyersville; and brothers- and sisters-in-law, Gerald Olberding, Ray (Gen) Olberding, Delbert (Marge) Olberding, Donald (Darlene) Olberding, Eileen Olberding, Alma Schlichte-Willenborg and Mildred Schlichte.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Linda Rausch, on May 30, 2003; siblings, Alvin Schlichte, Clarence (Julia) Schlichte, Elmer Schlichte and Lorraine (Mark) Pins; in-laws, Robert Olberding, Irma Olberding, Catherine Griffin, Mercedes (Gilbert) Singsank and Art Klostermann.
