Obituary of Hermann Gerd “Henry” Holthaus as published in the Thursday, March 10, 1921, issue of the Manchester Press (Delaware County, Iowa):
Henry H. Holthaus was born at Vechtel near Bippen, Hanover, Germany, December 11, 1842. There he received his education, religious instruction, and grew up to manhood. In 1867 he came to America and has always lived in the vicinity of Colesburg. He is therefore a well-known and highly respected old settler. He was married in 1869 to Anna M. Holscher. Their married life was blessed with 8 children of which three died in infancy. Nearly two years ago they were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary amidst a large circle of relatives and friends. Forty-four years ago Mr. Holthaus became a naturalized citizen of this country and always proved loyal and true. God blessed him with good health and a sound body. He always was a hard-working man and his honest efforts were crowned with visible success. Men like Mr. Holthaus truly help to make a country great and prosperous and never bring reproach or disgrace upon it. Soon after coming to Colesburg he experienced a genuine change of heart and united with the German Methodist Church of which he remained a member to the close of his life. For many years he served as steward in the church, doing his work faithfully. The same could be said of him as a class leader, his home for many years being the gathering place for his class. He was also an untiring worker in the S. S., nearly always teaching in the same. He and his noble family always were liberal supporters of the church and all benevolent causes. In him the church loses an earnest worker and a truehearted Christian. As a father he strictly enforced family rules and obedience to God's laws. His home and family, and his church and God he served, were the two things of his first concern. After his companion and mother of his children was taken away from him last May, he no longer found pleasure in the things pertaining to this life, but rather desired to depart. For nearly three months he has been failing or waiting for the Master's coming. During his sickness he never murmured. All during this time loving hands cared for him most kindly. On March 3, 1921, he closed his eyes in peaceful sleep at the age of 78 years, 2 months and 22 days. He is survived by his sister Mrs. Helena Hartke, four sons: George of Greeley; Fred, Ben and Joe of Colony Township; 1 daughter, Mrs. Ed Kruempel of Greeley; and 19 grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Emmanuel Church, conducted by Rev. Loemker, his pastor, assisted by Rev. A. C. Panzlau of St. Charles, his former pastor. Burial was made at Zion Cemetery.
