Helena (Holthaus) Hartke (1838-1926)
Mrs. H. H. Hartke passed away on Friday evening, July 23, 1926, at the advanced age of 87 years. Her death culminated a very brief illness from cerebral hemorrhage. Mrs. Hartke was staying with her granddaughter, Mrs. Vera VonTalge, while Mr. and Mrs. Kraus, with whom she made her home, are on a vacation trip. The VonTalge home is on the Hartke homestead, where Mrs. Hartke had spent the greater part of her life. Mr. and Mrs. William Kraus and son Elmer are touring the west, and no answering message has been received from them at this writing. When they departed two weeks ago, Mrs. Hartke was remarkably well for one of her years.

Helena Holthaus was born in Germany, where she grew to young womanhood and was united in marriage with H. H. Hartke. This vicinity has been their home for over sixty years. Mr. Hartke passed away several years ago. Her foster daughter, Mrs. William Kraus, and family, and Rev. H. J. Loemker of Sherrill, who made his home with the Hartke family in his youth, are the closest surviving friends of this venerable woman. She united with the German M. E. Church in her youth and remained a constant and faithful member during her long life. She has fought the good fight, she has kept the faith, and the sure reward is now hers. Funeral services were held from the Zion M. E. Church with interment in Zion Cemetery.
