GEORGE HALFHILL

George Halfhill was born in Jones County, Iowa, May 2, 1844 and died at the Soldier's Home in Marshalltown, February 24, 1923 aged seventy-eight years, nine months and twenty-two days.
From his home in Jones County he enlisted at the age of eighteen in the Union Army in the 21st Iowa Company I. He was with his Company while engaged in eleven of the heaviest battles of the Civil War, missing only one battle in which his Company was engaged and that because of wounds that incapacitated him for service.

While he was in service his parents moved to Delaware County settling near Almoral and here he returned after his discharge from the army.

In October 1866 he was united in marriage with Mary "Jane" Dodds. Six children, five sons and one daughter, came to bless this union. Two of the sons, Frederick and Daniel, preceded the father in death. The surviving children are: William of Grantville, West Virginia; Anna of Seattle, Washington; G. E. of Hampton, Iowa; and Edward.

They continued to make their home in Delaware and Clayton County. On February 2, 1901 his wife passed to the great beyond. In August 1902 he was united in marriage with Katherine Hill who survives him.

The sympathy of the community is extended to those who are bereaved by his passing. The funeral services was held in the Methodist Church, Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock in charge of H.W. Artman and the burial was in the Edgewood cemetery.
