Andrew L. Strain Dies After
Year's Illness; Was Born
in Indiana in 1843.

Manchester, Iowa, April 10—Andrew L. Strain, well known veteran of the Civil war, died at his home here Saturday evening after an illness of a year, which had confined him to his home since last September. Funeral services will, be Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at the North Manchester church, at which Rev. J. J. Kidder,: of Winthrop, will be assisted by Rev. E. D. Wells of the Manchester Methodist Episcopal Church. His comrades of the G A R., the Women's Relief corps and American Legion will attend the funeral services and members of the American Legion will act as pallbearers and provide a firing squad and color guard to give the old soldier military honors.

Mr. Strain was born in Gibson County, Ind., Nov. 18, 1843, the son of John and Eliza Strain Before he was 18 years old he enlisted. Oct. 5. 1861, in Company A, Forty-sixth Indiana volunteers for the period of the war. He was discharged, however, after rendering faithful service, on Feb. 17, 1863, for physical disability.

He came to Dubuque, Iowa in 1868, and on Feb. 9, 1869, was married there to Miss Nancy Jane Higgins. They removed to Indiana for a few years, later returned to Dubuque and came to Delaware County in 1900. Mr. Strain's life work was farming and he continued actively at work until 1912 when he and his wife located in Manchester.

He is survived by the widow and six living children, two sons having preceded him in death. The children are Harry N. Strain, Howard P. Strain and Homer B. Strain, Manchester; Jessie C. Strain, Oregon City, Ore.; Mrs. Carrie R. Wagner, Cedar Rapids, and Robert S. Strain, Waterloo. He leaves also the following grandchildren: Norman Strain and Bethel strain, Manchester; Newton, Arnold and Etta Strain, Oregon City, Ore.; Mrs. Floyd Heiden, Cedar Rapids; John Wagner, Cedar Rapids; Richard and Mildred* Strain, Waterloo. There are also three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Strain was past commander of W. A. Morse Post, G. A. R., for several years until increasing infirmities prevented his continuing in the post of honor. He had the confidence and respect of the community because of his sturdy adherence to high ideals of character and exemplary life. He was a favorite among the members of the American Legion because of his friendly interest in them and cheerful encouragement for their activities.

* Richard Strain's wife was Ardella E. (Seefeldt) Strain, daughter of Otto and Anna Seefeldt of St. Ansgar. Ardella graduated from Osage High School in 1928.
