The Hopkinton Leader speaks as follows of the life and death of one of the best known of the old settlers of Delaware county:

Benjamin Thorpe died last Saturday, November 2nd, at his home in Delhi. He was born at Stamford, Conn., Feb. 11th, 1814, and hence was nearly 82 years of age at the time of his death. Of him the Manchester Democrat says: "He was early thrown upon his own resources, being an orphan at ten years of age. He served as apprenticeship of seven years in hat manufacturing, and afterwards engaged in the business with success, but on account of his health, he was obligated to abandon it. Removing to Hackensack, New Jersey, he engaged in farming, in which he continued until he came west. In April 23rd, 1838, he was married to Elizabeth Lasher, who was his companion in life's journey until her departure, March 6, 1885. In November, 1855, with his family, he removed to Delhi, Iowa, where he passed the remainder of his life, engaged in mercantile pursuits. He had seven sons: Benjamin, Charles, Garrett, Perry, Alfred, George and Richard, and one daughter, Mrs. Chase, all of whom survive him.
