Frances Lorraine Mitchell, 80, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Friday, October 23, 2009, at Regional Medical Center in Manchester, in the presence of her family. She was born on March 25, 1929, in Indiana, the daughter of Francis and Julia Wilson. She was raised and educated in the area, and graduated from Short Ridge High School. She then attended Butler University and received her teaching credentials and taught third grade.

Lorraine was united in marriage to Michael Joseph Mitchell in 1948. They made their home in Indiana, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Two children were born to this union. Lorraine also worked at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. After retiring they resided 15 years in Arizona.

Lorraine enjoyed dancing (she taught dance in her early years), crocheting, going out to eat, visiting with her Tucson friends, and writing letters.

Survivors include her son, Bruce and his wife Cynthia Mitchell of Manchester; her daughter, Dawn and her husband Sherman Welden of San Mateo, California; one grandson, Shannon Mitchell of Vernon Hills, Illinois; two step-grandchildren, Waynette (Jeremy) Sears-Bishop and Michael D. Sears; and five great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Jim (Brenda) Mitchell of Eufaula, Alabama; and a half-brother, Bill (Maureen) Van Over of S. Portland, Maine.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband for 57 years, Michael; her mother, Julia Van Over.
