Achelis Fanning Burchett was born Mar. 1, 1825 Claiborne County, Tennessee and died November 16, 1904, Grand River, Iowa, the son of John and Jane (Marion) Burchett. He was from a family of ten children, namely: Samuel, Solina, John, James, Burrell, Benjamin, Tabitha, Mary, Hulda and Achelis.

He married January 1, 1846 in Tennessee to Leah Jane Anderson who was born September 3, 1822, Tenn., and died August 2, 1907 Decatur County, Iowa, the daughter of Abraham and Rachel (Jones) Anderson. Both [Achelis and Leah] are buried in Wheelis or Tennessee Cemetery in Decatur County.

Achelis and Leah moved from Tennessee between 1847-49 period and settled in Indiana for several years during which time Rachel, Franklin and Marshall were born. Rebecca (Burchett) Clawson (mother to Faye Jones DeVore) said there were 40 persons in this group along with her parents who emigrated to Iowa.

Roy Clawson remembers hearing how his Grandmother Burchett (Leah) used to take her clothes two miles to the river to wash them. It would take all day, She would take a lunch with her and hang the clothes up on the bushes to dry. They became the parents of eight children:

Marshall, b. 22 Nov 1854 IN; d. 1926; m. Sarah Elizabeth Grimm, b. 1861; d. 1932; inter. Grand River Cemetery.

Mary Belle "Cherry", b. 03 Oct 1857 IA; d. 30 Jan 1941 IA; m. Jarvis W. Wornstaff, b. 1856; d. 1942; inter. Wheelis Cem.

Lucinda, b. 22 Dec 1860 IA; d. 31 Jan 1950; m. Dennis Taylor Edwards, b. 23 Oct 1853; d. 13 Feb 1941; inter. Hale MO.

William Cole, b. 10 Sep 1863 IA; d. 23 Oct 1942; m. Sarah Elizabeth "Sadie" Dietrich, b. 1863; d. 1960; inter. Wheelis Cemetery.
