Mary Ann Akins Hoff (1833-1907)

AKINS, ADKINS, HOFF

Mary Ann Akins, dtr of Nathaniel Adkins (note spelling change) B: 13 Nov 1833 Henry Co., Indiana; D: 13 Feb 1907 Waukee/Dallas Co., IA; Md to John H. Hoff (1830-1909) on 11 April 1855 in Des Moines, IA; Buried Waukee Cem., IA. She is my Grt.Grandmother, through her son (th 7th of 8 children): JOHN CASSIUS HOFF (5 Mar 1875 - 10 Mar 1960 DSM, IA), and his spouse: Mabel Mina Tennant Hoff(1888-1963); and their son, JOHN RICHARD HOFF (6 Feb 1909 DSM - 4 Nov 1970 DSM); Spouse: Valetta Florence Scott Hoff), and me, JOHN SCOTT HOFF (02 Jan 1946 - ).

Many records show her born in "Mich", but the 1840-1850 Census in Berriens Co., MI properly show her POB as "Indiana", where Nathaniel Adkins, her father initially lived & 3 children were born, until moving to Michigan between 1830-1840. The 1850 MI Census shows there to be 6-7 siblings. Nathaniel shows his POB as "NY", but his father's name and exact POB is not given. Recorded census records in NY give about 10 possibilities where the age would be about right. Also, a ABIJAH ATKINS is listed only 4 names below Nathaniel's in the 1850 MI census, implying that they were neighbors, and strongly appear to have been brothers. Both had daughters who they each named MARY ANN "AKINS" (dropping the "D" & "T"). It is uncertain how JOHN H. HOFF and MARY ANN AKINS met (him moving to Iowa in ~1854 from Rochester, IL (near Springfield in Peoria Co.) and her family living in Beriens Co., MI. She would only have been age 22 when married. 6 of her 8 children ar listed in the site of Arnold Hovey for Mary Ann Akins/ John H. Hoff, but 2 are left out: 1. HILY HOFF, who died as an infant on 18 March 1875 and is interred next to them in Waukee; and, 2. CHARLES WORTH HOFF B: 1880.

The disposition of the Adkins Farm near Waukee, IA is unknown following the death of Nathaniel.
