Mrs. Clara Johnson, One of the Old Time Residents of Stockholm Township, Dies at Lawton

Death Brings Much Sadness

Deceased a Good and True Wife and Mother Whose Life's Work Remains as a monument

Kiron, May 22 - Special--
Mrs. Clara Johnson, whose death we reported last week, at Lawton, Iowa was born 26 Sept 1834 in Sweden, where she grew up and resided until 1869, when she came to America and coming direct to Kiron where she resided for fifty one years. On April 6, 1871, she was united in marriage to C. J. Johnson, which union was blessed with four children, one son Harry, residing at Lawton, one daughter, Mrs. Elmer Mauritz at Bronson, and one daughter, Mrs. Clara A. Rosemeier, at Freeport. During the past two months she had been ill, suffering with heart trouble and on Sunday May 13, death came to release her. On that day she was able to be about as usual and shortly before her death was walking about the house so her death came unexpectedly to near ones and friends. Her death was most peaceful and calm, just as falling into a sweet sleep as her soul left its earthly tabernacle, for its blissful home in the celestial city. When the news reached Kiron, it brought sadness to the many friends and old neighbors.

She was converted to God over sixty years ago. She was baptized and joined the Baptist church at Kiron, Sept. 15, 1869, where she remained a member up to the time of her death.

For many years the family resided on the old homestead now owned by Fred Baker, one mile east of town and when Kiron was built, moved into town, where they resided until 1910, when Mr. and Mrs. Johnson moved to Bronson to make their home with their daughter, Mrs. Elmer Mauritz and husband. Six years later, when the latter moved to Lawton, the Johnson family moved with them and at this place her death occurred.

Mrs. Johnson was a good and true mother and wife and woman, and whose life's works and acts will remain as a monument for many years to come. Locating in this locality in the early pioneer days, she shared the hardships and disadvantages which then had to be met and endured. She also aided greatly and cheerfully in the helping of others in those days. In her home she was a model wife, and mother, devoted and faithful in her ministering and labor for her dear ones and spared nothing to promote their welfare. At all times she drew the respect and friendship of all who came in contact with her by her pure and upright life and her Christianity was not composed of merely a profession of the same but a genuine possession of the salvation of Jesus Christ which was strongly evidenced and characterized in her life and daily living. She enjoyed her salvation and communion with her God and Savior. in whom she found her supply of comfort and power to meet and overcome the difficulties of life that she met with during her pilgrimage in life. She looked forward and rejoiced in the blessed future; promised those who followed their Savior in the good old book, which was her constant loved companion which state she now has reached and will enjoy in all eternity. Blessed are those who die trusting in the Lord and which can truly be said of her. Her journey and pilgrimage was a long and at times a stormy one, but guided and supported to her Heavenly pilot, she has at last reached the calm, peaceful harbor on eternity's shores, where no death, chilled storms, or trials and afflictions are permitted to enter but are forever quarantined to enter. She is now watching and waiting at the celestial portals for the arrival of the loved ones and friends.

She leaves to mourn and miss her , her devoted and sorrowing husband, one son, two daughters, other relatives and a large circle of old and young friends. The funeral took place last Tuesday. Rev. Jones and Rev. Faust conducting the services, which were held at the First Presbyterian church at Lawton, and her body was laid to rest in the Graceland cemetery at Sioux City. The funeral was attended by a large number of neighbors and friends. Those attending from this locality were Mr. and Mrs. John Erickson, C. S. Johnson, C. A. Dolk, and Mrs. S. P. Swartz of Boyer.
