I am searching for anything that might help me identify the Brandenburgs or learn more about the Kreuchers. I would be interested in plat books of this time period, burial information, obituaries, etc."
Anton Francis Kreucher came to the US on the ship the Cimbria in February of 1869. He was born in Kreuzberg Prussia.
Many of the Clinton towns people knew of Anton because of his musical talents. In Germany he was a professor of music and, when he came to the US, he continued to give music lessons in the Clinton area. He played 16 instruments or more, and his sone Joe played in bands with him.
In about 1882 or so his brother John followed Anton to the US from Kreuzberg, with his wife, Anna Bings, and their children. Those Kreuchers still live in the Clinton area.
Anton married Johanna Maria Fredricka Augusta Brandenburg in 1873. She came to Lyons, Iowa in October of 1864. Johanna's family is a mystery. It is believed that she had brothers and sisters. We know that one sister, possibly named Kate, married a policeman named Henderson or Henrickson.
Her parents first names are unknown to us. Johanna's mother is buried in Oakland Cemetery. She died in March of 1880. It is said that after she died her husband moved to DeWitt and started a new family. There might be some evidence to support this through the Brandenburgs that lived there, specifically an Albert. I don't know where Johanna's father is buried.
Johanna & Anton had 10 children. They lived at 2412 Cleveland Ave., known as 8th street at that time. Neighbors of the Kreuchers were Mrs. Breen, Dr. Chas. Osborn, Aloyioces Cassman and Elizabeth Boker. Johanna died in 1896 leaving behind four very young children. She is buried in St. Boniface Cemetery. Anton couldn't care for his young children himself and sent them to live at the St. Mary's Orphanage in Dubuque. He moved to Laurel Mississippi where he died just four years later.
Several of the children married Clinton residents. Joseph C. Kreucher married Alma (Maud) Margaret Henderson, born in 1878. They were divorced after having three children.
Otto Kreucher married Nettie Armstrong and they had one daughter named Nellie, born in July of 1894. It is said that Nettie is a relative of Harriet Beecher Stowe. Nettie's brother, Robert, married Mary Kreucher, and they had three children. They moved to California and settle there.
Fredericka August Kreucher married Louis Christian Johanssen and they had four children before divorcing. Cecile b 21 Jul 1901, Ethel b Dec 1902, Louis b 06 Jan 1904 and Arthur b 04 Sep 1911
