County Jail Records

MILLER, STRITTMATTER

I believe that I have found my grandfather, Arthur William Miller, b. 1897 (possibly August 5th) in the Clinton County Jail in the 1940 Census. Are there any records available?

From what I can find and the stories I have heard, this was probably not his first time incarcerated. He was born in either Joliet, IL or Hollywood, CA (he listed both on different records). He has stated that his parents were a Frank and Anna Miller, both born in Iowa (according to 1930 Rockford, Winnebago Co, IL Census). He married my grandmother, Martha Strittmatter in LaCrosee, WI in 1922. I have also found a WW II draft card from 1944 and he is living in Freeport, Stephenson County, IL. He listed an Edward Denton/Denten/Denter of San Antonio, TX as an uncle that would always know his address.

Not sure if he was in Clinton County because he had family there or was just passing through. If there are any records available, please let me know.
