DEWITT — Esther H. Barber, 86, of DeWitt, Iowa, died Friday, January 2, 2009, at West Wing Place, DeWitt, Iowa. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 6, 2009, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in DeWitt with Pastor Jeff Wartgow officiating. A lunch will follow the service in the church social hall. The Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements. Esther Henrietta Goers was born on February 8, 1922, in rural Clinton County, Iowa, the daughter of William and Meta (Gade) Goers. She married Ivan Barber on October 17, 1941, in Kirksville, Missouri. Prior to her marriage, Esther was employed with the Calendar Factory and Mutual Insurance Company in DeWitt. Esther’s married life was spent as a homemaker caring for her family. She enjoyed ballroom dancing, cooking and traveling. Esther enjoyed annual family gatherings at Finn ‘n Feather Resort near Bemidji, Minnesota. Esther was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in DeWitt, DeWitt American Legion Auxiliary and DeWitt Hospital Auxiliary. Esther was involved with the Noon Lions Club lunches. Esther is survived by her husband, Ivan of DeWitt; one son, Roger (Roberta) Barber of Lincoln, Nebraska; three daughters, Rhea (Bob) Lease of Colman, South Dakota, Becky (Gary) Green of Hartland, Wisconsin, and Lynn (Jim) Goodall of DeWitt, Iowa; 9 grandchildren, Britt Maifeld, Ashley Lease, Mike Barber, Nate Barber, Brigham Green, Chelsey Green, Curtis Goodall, Hillary Goodall, and Kaitlin Goodall; 4 great-grandchildren, Anna, Sara, Ben and Ella Maifeld; one sister, Mildred Mathews of Chattanooga, Tennessee; and one brother, Harry Goers of Maquoketa. Esther was preceded in death by her parents, William and Meta Goers; and three sisters, Violet Goers, Wilma Knutsen and Edna Goers. Memorials can be made to the First Congregational United Church of Christ or the Westwing Place.
