DAVENPORT — Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Monica Rose “Billie” Walton, 85, a resident of Davenport will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 4, 2008, at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 422 E. 10th Street, Davenport. Burial will be in the National Cemetery Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home. The family invites you to join them for a prayer service Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Walton died peacefully on Sunday, November 30, 2008, at the Davenport Lutheran Home. She was surrounded by her loving family at the time of her passing.Monica Rose Lanaghan was born August 20, 1923, in Lyons, Iowa, the youngest child of eight born to Patrick J. and Eileen (O’Rourke) Lanaghan. She was united in marriage to Raymond Thomas Walton on June 19, 1948, in Clinton, Iowa. He preceded her in death on January 14, 2005. Mrs. Walton graduated from the University of Iowa. She dedicated her married life to her husband and raising her family.Billie was a very active member of the Democratic Party, locally and nationally. She was a delegate to the 1972 Democratic National Convention and had been a candidate for Scott County Supervisor, accomplishments she was very proud of. She was a member of Sacred Heart Cathedral and a forty-plus year member of the choir; she was also a member of the Catholic Service Board; Scott County United Nations Organization; Scott County Association for Retarded Children; Iowa Women’s Political Caucus; and the Davenport Catholic Interracial Council.Memorials are suggested to Humility of Mary Housing or the Handicapped Development Center.Those left to honor her memory include daughters, Maureen Walton and friend John Smetana, Hastings, MN; and Julie Walton, Davenport; sons and daughters-in-law, Patrick Walton, Davenport; Dennis and Audrey Walton, Tucson, AZ; Robert and Marian Walton, Durant; and Michael and Gail Walton, Davenport; eight grandchildren and one great-grandson; and a sister, Patricia Sturtz, of Waterloo.In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Karen Fitzsimmons; and four brothers and two sisters.
