ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — John T. Powers, 90, of Rock Island, Ill., died Thursday, December 4, 2008, at Silver Cross Nursing Center, Rock Island.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Delmar, Ia. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, where military honors will be presented by the Eugene McManus American Legion Post 238 of DeWitt. Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. until the service time Tuesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Delmar. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island, is assisting the family with arrangements.John was born on June 6, 1918, in Delmar, a son of Richard J. and Mary Brinkman Powers. He married Margaret V. Hallin on November 18, 1978, in Rock Island.Mr. Powers graduated from Delmar High School. He was a rural mail carrier in the Delmar area for 35 years. John also worked part time as the bookkeeper for Farmer’s Supply Center of Elwood and Delmar.John was a WW II U.S. Army veteran, having served as a crew member on a B-24. He was shot down over Germany and served nine months in a German P.O.W. camp before being freed by the Russians. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island, and a former member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Delmar. He was also a member of several veteran’s organizations. John enjoyed traveling and following world affairs and politics.Survivors include his wife, Margaret; sister-in-law, Patricia Powers, Delmar; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters.Death date: Dec. 4, 2008
