DIED - At his residence in Giard township, Clayton county Iowa, on Monday morning, Dec. 22d, 1862, of Diptheria preceded by lung disease, Benjamin F. Spaulding, about 40 years of age.
The deceased was born in the State of New York. He emigrated to Michigan quite early in life, and was for many years a resident of Dowagise, Berrien county. He had resided several years in Clayton county, Iowa and had as large an acquaintance, probably, as any man.
At the time of his death he was acting Deputy Marshal for the State of Iowa, and from all we can learn he was a most efficient officer. [illegible] fatigable, untiring and shrewd, he was frequently employed as a detective and it is said he rarely failed to track up a criminal.
Socially, he was excellent company, generous, free spoken and reliable. In his death, a wife and children mourn the loss of their protector; the community mourns the loss of an excellent citizen.
