Emmett Francis Whittle, son of John and Julia Whittle, was born March 18, 1888, at Flanders, S.Dak., and died Nov. 06, 1957, at the Oelwein hospital after an illness of two weeks.

Mr. Whittle came to Clayton county as a child and moved to his present home in Boardman township in 1941. He received his education in the rural schools and chose farming as his vocation.

In 1927, he was married to Lucille Brenner at Volga.

He was a member of the Lemka-Stendel Post of the American Legion of Elkader, the Holy Name society, and St. Joseph's Catholic church.

Mr. Whittle served his country in the infantry during World War I, and was overseas one year with Company M 352nd Infantry, 88th Division.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Rose Mary, who died in infancy; four brothers, Clem, Leo, Joe and John, and one sister, who died as a child.

He is survived by his wife, one son, Ivan Francis, and one daughter, Mrs. Ralph (Donna) Miller, Toddville, Iowa; three brothers, Ambrose, Elkader; Al, Waukon; Van, Strawberry Point; two sisters, Mrs. Blanch Blankholm of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mrs. Harriet Matt, Elkader, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning, Nov. 09, 1957, at St. Joseph's Catholic church with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Daniel A. Gorman officiating at the Mass, and the Rev. Martin Laughlin at the cemetery. The Lemka-Stendel Post of the American Legion functioned as military escort.

Burial was at the Volga Sacred Heart cemetery. Pallbearers were: George Cassutt, Rudy Possehl, Mervin Larson, Thomas Bergan, Ray Welsh and Steve Dolon.

Relatives attending the funeral from a distance were: Al Whittle and family, Waukon; Norbert Whittle and Lawrence Whittle, Milwaukee, Wis.; Mrs. Marvin Hoppenworth, Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Brenner, and Mr. and Mrs. Don Brenner, Cedar Rapids; Fred Brenner, Rock Creek, Minn., and Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Whittle, Harpers Ferry.
