DIED - At the military hospital at Fort Randall, D.T., on the morning of the 4th of February, Sergt. S.H. Woodward, Co. L, 6th Regiment Iowa Cavalry Volunteers, aged about 25 years; his disease was inflammation of the lungs.
The subject of this notice enlisted with Capt. Ames in the fall of 1862 as a private and by his gentlemanly manners, good conduct and attention to military education, he was promoted step by step till at the time of his death he had reached the highest position in the company (outside of commission), an Orderly Sergeant.
During his extreme sickness of one week he had all the attention that could be extended to any one, the Post Surgeon, Dr. Bardwell, was untiring in his efforts to alleviate his acute sufferings, but all failed; he had loved his country and offered up his all at her shrine.
To his bereaved friends and especially his parents, we offer our unfeigned sympathy. I am only speaking the sentients of the whole company when I say that he was universally beloved and that in his death we feel that we have sustained a loss that will be almost impossible to fill again.
